Shopify added an "Agentic" sales channel. Here's what it actually is, and what to do about it.

The short answer: Shopify's Agentic channel connects your products to AI shopping assistants like ChatGPT, so people can find and buy them inside an AI chat. It was switched on automatically for stores selling to US customers on March 24, 2026. Being switched on does not mean you are recommended. Whether an AI picks your product depends on how good your product data is.

If you have spotted Agentic under Sales Channels in your Shopify admin and wondered what it is, here is the clear version. It is Shopify connecting your products directly to AI shopping assistants like ChatGPT, so people can find and buy your products inside an AI chat instead of on Google. For most stores selling to US customers, it was switched on automatically. You did not opt in.

This is worth paying attention to. Traffic from AI tools to Shopify stores has grown sevenfold since January 2025, so this is a real channel, not an experiment. Here is what it actually is, and what a store owner should do this week.

What "agentic storefronts" actually means

Someone opens ChatGPT and types "waterproof jacket from a sustainable brand under 150 euro." Instead of sending them to a list of links, the AI reads Shopify's product catalog, picks a few products it thinks fit, and shows them right there in the conversation, with the option to buy. That shopper never visits Google, never lands on a marketplace, and maybe never even visits your homepage. The AI is the storefront now.

Shopify calls this Agentic Storefronts. It works through something called Shopify Catalog. You list your products once, and Shopify shares that data with the AI platforms it has partnered with. A merchant lists once and is automatically connected to every current and future AI partner. There is no app to install and no separate feed to maintain.

The part that surprised a lot of owners: Agentic Storefronts were auto-enabled on March 24, 2026 for all eligible stores. If you sell to US customers and your products were already in Shopify Catalog, you were opted in by default. That is why the channel just appeared in your admin.

The AI channels at a glance

AI channel Status now Where the purchase happens
ChatGPT Live, for stores selling to US buyers On your own store, in a ChatGPT in-app browser
Microsoft Copilot Rolling out Embedded checkout inside Copilot
Google AI Mode and Gemini Select brands, broader rollout underway Embedded, native checkout
Shop app Always on In the Shop app

The key difference: ChatGPT sends the customer to your store to finish the purchase, so all your branding, checkout, and payment methods still apply. Copilot and Google AI Mode keep the customer inside the AI to check out.

Who is actually eligible, and the catch for EU stores

This is the part most guides skip, and it matters if you are not in the US. The channel is open to merchants anywhere, but the buyer side is US-first. Your store must sell to customers in the United States, though your store can be based outside the United States. So a Netherlands-based store that ships to US customers can show up in ChatGPT. A store that only sells within the EU mostly cannot use the in-chat checkout yet.

For European owners, the honest read is that the checkout side is coming but is not fully here. The useful move now is to get your product data ready, so that when the EU rollout arrives you are already in a position to be recommended rather than starting from zero.

"Enabled" is not "recommended," and this is the whole game

Here is the thing that owners switched on by default tend to miss. Being in the channel only makes you eligible to be recommended. Whether the AI actually picks your product comes down to your product data, and most stores have a data problem they do not know about.

When an AI decides what to surface, it reads your product titles, descriptions, image alt text, pricing, inventory, and your policy pages. Research published in April 2026 found that stores with thin product descriptions or missing image alt text get pushed down in AI recommendations, even when they are enrolled in the program. A product called "Blue Shirt" with a one-line description and no alt text is invisible to an AI trying to match "breathable cotton shirt for hot weather." The AI cannot recommend what it cannot understand.

So the work is not technical setup. It is making your product data good enough that an AI can confidently put you forward. That is a content and merchandising job, and it is one you can start today.

What to actually do this week

  1. Check your status. Go to Sales Channels, then Agentic, in your Shopify admin. You will see each AI channel listed as Active or Inactive, and you can control what is shared.
  2. Decide if you even want in. You can disable catalog access per channel if it does not fit your brand. Disabling takes up to 7 days to fully process, and even with catalog access off, your products may still appear through web crawling by AI bots. So opting out is not as clean as a single switch.
  3. Fix your top 10 products' data first. Descriptive, standalone titles. Full descriptions that say how, when, and why someone uses the product. Real image alt text. Clear, complete policy pages. Start with your best sellers, because that is where a recommendation is worth the most.
  4. Watch the attribution. Every order flows into your admin tagged with which AI channel drove it. Once you have cleaned up your data, that is how you will see whether any of this is working.

Frequently asked questions

Can I turn the Agentic channel off?

Not with a single switch. You can disable catalog access per channel under Sales Channels, then Agentic. It takes up to 7 days to fully process, the Shop app cannot be turned off this way, and your products may still appear through AI web crawling even with catalog access off.

Does being enabled mean ChatGPT will recommend my products?

No. Being enabled only makes your products eligible. Whether an AI recommends you depends on the quality of your product data, including titles, descriptions, image alt text, pricing, and policy pages.

I sell in the EU. Does this apply to me?

Partly. The channel is open to merchants based anywhere, but the buyer side is US-first. For ChatGPT, your store must sell to customers in the United States, though it can be based outside the US. EU-only checkout is not fully available yet.

Does the Agentic channel cost extra?

There is no separate subscription cost for the Agentic Storefronts channel itself beyond standard payment processing. Some individual AI channels may carry their own per-partner fees, which appear in your Shopify admin.

The short version

The Agentic channel is Shopify putting your products inside AI shopping assistants, switched on by default for US-facing stores since March 2026. Showing up there is not automatic, though. It depends entirely on how good your product data is. The owners who win the next year are not the ones who enabled it. They are the ones who made their products easy for an AI to understand and confident to recommend.

That is the work we do, getting brands ready to be the thing AI recommends, not just eligible for it. If you want to know where your store stands today, that is a good place to start a conversation.
